Good evening all, as we are still short on a number of volunteers for both days for the upcoming 2 day walk (April 7 & 8), I am making a follow-on call for volunteers for this event. Upcoming WICEN events (and call for assistance for Rallye des Femme)

Merry New Year everyone, and now that Australia Day has been reached it's time for us to look ahead to what's happening on the WICEN front. A quick list of known events is as follows..... Sat 24 Feb BMSC's Rallye des Femme (RdF) Kowen Forest Sat 24 Mar LCCC's Wedding Bells Rally Sprint Uriarra Forest (Don't think operators are needed for this one) Sun 1 Apr BCDC National Carriage Driving Championships Witwood Sat / Sun 7/8 Apr Canberra 2 Day Walk Sat / Sun 2/3 Jun BMSC's National Capital Rally (NatCap) Sat / Sun 9/10 Jun SCSCC Bega Rally At this point in time, we are only cally for assistance for the Rallye des Femme on Sat 24th Feb. RdF consists of 2 forest stages in Kowen Forest, with each stage run twice. SS1 / 3 / 5 is the "Settlement" stage and which is approx 6.9 KM's long, and needs a Start, SOS A & Stop SS2 / 4 / 6 is the "River Road"stage and is which approx 17.5 KM's long, and needs a Start, SOS A, SOS B & Stop HQ is expected to be up on the hill near the old water tanks as in past years and we need 3-4 people for HQ across the day. SS1 is planned to have the first competitor enter at around 1:30 PM, the Meet Time would probably be around 11:00 AM SS2 is planned to have the first competitor enter at around 2:00 PM, the Meet Time would probably also be around 11:00 AM At this stage I believe the event should finish around 5:30 PM, though that could slip a little. We are planning to use a single VHF repeater for the WICEN network, this will probably be 147.125 MHz. I will not be available on the day as my eldest daughter has opted to have her engagement party that day and so I'll be helping with that. As I won't be there we need somebody to volunteer to act as WICEN Commander for the day so please consider stepping up for that also. In a somewhat reversal, my youngest daughter Erica (VK1FRIC) get's her Drivers Licence on the 2nd of Feb and she WILL be out at the rally for the day before heading to her sisters engagement party ! 2018 National Capital Rally date announced, and it WILL be a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) !

Hi everyone, I received this email on Friday and was awaiting the formal announcemnts before forwarding it on. The first one below is from Adrian Dudock, the chief NatCat Rally organiser & Clerk of Course. The following section is from Ellie Yates, the NatCap publicity person. Note that the Canberra Times article on the link has a few errors, where they say "NCR" they normally mean "APRC" as of course the actual National Capital Rally has been running for many many years in one guise or another. It's too early to be taking 'expressions of interest' but at least there is a date that we can pencil in on next years calendar ! I can finally communicate with you about next year's event. After the club's (BMSC) decision after this year's event to not continue with the APRC we were going to run a really great ARC, the date we ended up with was the weekend after the Bathurst 1000 in October, not ideal but we were on the calendar. For 2018 there are 3 events that want to be considered for ARC status so we at least kept our date. We brokered a deal with Netier to be the naming right sponsors, but we lost the Doma group through no fault of the event. We are working on a new accommodation partners as we speak. The last ten days have been interesting to say the least, CAMS approached me with an offer of getting the APRC back in Canberra, after much negotiation and soul searching we came to an agreement so, The "Netier National Capital Rally" will be an APRC round and run on the 1 - 3 June 2018, we should be super proud that the powers that be felt us worth supporting to bring the event back here. An official announcement will be made by CAMS and Netier over the weekend and from there we are all go. WICEN support to Fitz's challenge - additional call for volunteers

This event occurs next weekend (Sunday 29 October) and we still have a couple of positions that we need to fill in both the headquarters and out on the course. Seeking expressions of interest - WICEN Exercise at COOMA on Sat 4th November.....

Good evening all, and apologies to those who get this email twice. WICEN has been approached about assisting with a Car Rally being conducted at Cooma on Sat November 4th. This event is being conducted by the Light Car Club of Canberra (LCCC) and consists of 7 separate stages on council roads around Cooma. Ideally we would like to be able to have enough people to man 18 field stations with 3 in HQ, which is quite an ask of course. There is a possibility that people on SS1 & 2 could relocate to SS6 & 7 but timing would be tight. My wife Sally & I went down and drove the course recently and it looks to be a very fast set of roads for the competitors (I was averaging 90 - 100kph in my Ute). The schedule has the first car commencing from Cooma Township at 10:00 AM meaning the first stage needs to be set-up and ready around 9:00 and so I would expect a meet time of around 8:00 AM out near the Snowy Mountains Airport. Last stage is expected to finish around 5:30 PM. Travel time to Cooma from Canberra CBD is around 1Hr & 20 minutes according to Google so an early start for people wishing to attend. WICEN traffic will be on VHF and hand-held radio's are not suitable, a good mobile radio capable of 10 watts or better and a good antenna is a must for this one. All places are accessible by standard 2WD vehicles and the roads are all in good condition. All comers welcome, whether you have done a car rally before or not we can use you, but transport is your responsibility. So, who, if anyone, can assist with this exercise ? Fitz's Challenge 2017 - call for volunteers

As requested below, PLEASE respond to the wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org <mailto:wicen@crarc.ampr.org> email address rather than directly to me. ------------------------------------------------------------------- In the middle of a very busy WICEN season, Fitz's challenge bicycle ride will host more than 1,000 riders on Sunday 29 October and we need about 13 volunteers to assist in the following tasks: - 4 in shifts at Stromlo Forest Park (WICEN operations and Fitz Challenge operations HQ) from 0600h to approx 1600h. - 9 operators at 8 checkpoints for safety, coordination and straggler wrangling. Various times start and stop. Note that the 'Gravel Pit' at Murray's Corner on Paddys River Rd gets two shifts to cover 0930 to 1800. This is a great opportunity for Foundation Licence and newcomers to WICEN to gain experience. We can buddy you up if you do not have the gear or are not yet confident to run solo. All checkpoints are accessible on sealed roads. A blank copy of the 2016 roster, is attached as an example as times and locations will be similar in 2017. This shows where the checkpoints are and their opening times. Coverage on 2m using the Ginini and Isaacs 2m repeaters is adequate at most checkpoints, but a mobile (10W to 60W) with external antenna is recommended. HQ radio gear and Pedal Power marshal vehicle radios will be installed at Stromlo Park on Saturday 28 October. Help with this is most welcome. The ride (and checkpoints) are in some of the region's most attractive landscapes and for WICEN operators it provides a pleasant, low noise, dust free bush experience. WICEN - Call for assistance for the Rallye des Femme (Lady drivers Rally) October 14....

Hello all, The annual BMSC "Rallye des Femme" is being conducted on Saturday the 14th of October and will consist of 3 Rally stages each run twice (total of 6 stages). The area's being used are in the Uriarra & Tidbinbilla / Pierces area's and are the same courses as the Sunday run of this years National Capital Rally. The stages are ... SS1 / SS4 Hyles Block Start, SOS A, Stop SS2 / SS5 East West Start, SOS A, SOS B, SOS C, Stop SS3 / SS6 Cottage 5 Ways Start, SOS A, SOS B, SOS C, SOS D, SOS E, Stop HQ will either be at the Vibe Hotel at the Canberra Airport (depends on where the room is and what access to the outside of the building can be obtained) or out as a field HQ on Blue Range Road. Meet times and locations have yet to be set in stone, but I expect something like Hyles meet at 8:30, close at 14:30, East West meet at 8:30, close at 15:30 and Cottage 5 Ways meet at 9:30 with close at 16:15 The field is restricted to 30 vehicles, and based on past years reaching that number may be a bit of a dream. Brookvale Horse Endurance Ride - call for volunteers

Good evening all, the Spring WICEN season is fast approaching with the first event occurring on the first weekend in September, that being the Brookvale Horse Endurance Ride which is held out in the forests near Uriarra. At this stage we have agreed to support the Sunday (3rd September), but if there is sufficient interest from WICEN personnel, we would also look to support a small part of the event on the Saturday as well (2nd September). This is an enjoyable slow paced event and will use 2m portable setups in a variety of forest locations in and around Uriarra plus the HQ setup at Brookvale. Some of the checkpoints would benefit from having 4WD capability to access them, but some will be 2WD accessible. This is an easy slow paced event that allows newcomers to get an introduction to this type of communications activity - simply reporting the numbers of horses that go past and assisting with some admin traffic. Could I ask for those able to support this event to let us know via the WICEN organising email address (wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org <mailto:wicen@crarc.ampr.org> ) of your availability, specifying which (or both) of the days you would like to assist on and also if you have a 4WD vehicle. There is the possibility of camping being available at the ride base on the Saturday night, so please also advise if you would be interested in taking advantage of this (availability of this to be confirmed). National Capital Rally WICEN component - we are still DESPERATE for operators !

Good morning everyone, With the National Capital Rally now only some 9 days away we find ourselves still short of people to assist. On the Saturday we need 17 field stations and 4-6 people in HQ and so far we have a total of 15 for the day, Sunday we need 15 field stations and again 4-6 in HQ and we are a little better off with 18 people registered. Don't be daunted if you have not done anything of this nature before, we have numerous locations where all you have to do is watch the cars go past, write down the car number and time it passed you and then radio the car number to HQ. It doesn't sound like much but it is of immense value to the HQ staff as it permits competitors to be tracked through the competitive stages of the rally from a safety aspect. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in Amateur Radio to take part, and if you don't have a licence as yet then we can use you in HQ as an operator under supervision. Please consider volunteering your time for either Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th May (or both).
