G'day Garry, it is simple WICEN and CRARC support these events so that as a NOT FOR PROFIT organisation we can make a little bit of coin to support all the activies the club undertakes, let alone the taking care or our repeaters etc.. It also gives members the opportunity to keep their communications skills up todate so that they can be called on in an emergency by civil authorities.... As for CB, it is a complete waste of time in this region.... deliberate interference, nuisance traffic is not what the rally organisations need, our radio networks provide hassle free immediate communications for safety.... Next WICEN event - Rallye des Femme - Saturday 10th December !

Good evening all, Well the Rallye des Femme (Introductory rally for lady drivers) is fast approaching and so I thought I had beeter get the proverbial finger out and start seeking people to assist. This is a small 9 stage (3 stages each run 3 times) event at Kowen Forest We will need 9 field stations and 4 or so people in HQ. There will probably be between 10 and 15 competitors from early indications. So, to keep it short and simple - Who can assist on that day ? Desperate need for somebody to store the WICEN trailer for a while !!!

Good evening all, Well the latest WICEN activity held today is over, and thanks to all those who assisted, The gents in Rally Control were once again very impressed with our effort. Now the issue.... We need somebody to volunteer to house the grey WICEN trailer for a while as my yard space has disappeared due to excavations done today prior to new concrete being laid between now & Xmas (or later - depends on mys son Adam VK1FADD). Ian VK1FMAC has taken the trailer home tonight (Saturday) but needs it gone by 6:00 PM Sunday. Please Please Please, If anyone can mind it for a few weeks (or longer) then please let us know so we can arrange to get it out of ian's place ASAP. The next WICEN event is the lady drivers "Rallye des Femme" on Dcember 10th and so we will need it then. Cheers for now, Phil VK1PL.

WICEN exercise Saturday 14th November - LCCC "Safari Rally"

Good morning all (well it is morning as I type this !) I know we are all still recovering from the double whammy weekend of the NatCap rally & Fitz's challenge, but we have another event in 10 days time being the Light Car Club of Canberra (LCCC) "Shannon's Safari Rally" on Saturday 14th November. This car rally is fairly compact in that they have just 4 stages with each run twice. The stages are : SS1 / 5 Murrays Corner SS2 / 6 Mineshaft SS3 / 7 Blue Range SS4 / 8 Bluetts HQ - Uriarra Village Hall ("new" Schoolhouse) To fully support the event we need 11 field stations and 5 people in HQ. So, once again we seek your assistance and ask that you send an email to wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org if you can help out with this one, and what preferences and/or restrictions you may have regarding timeframes or equipment. Good afternoon all. I have had a machine crash and I lost my email address list, I think I have all my data however. Next weekend we have 2 x WICEN exercises with Saturday 29th being the annual NatCap rally & Sunday being Fitz's Challenge. We are presently short 12 people for the car rally, and 11 people for the bike ride. I have sent out pleas via the CRARC Email news (It was the only Email address I had available at the time), but I don't know if you receive them hence this follow up email. Please, if you can help at either (or both) of these events, let me know ASAP so I can get a roster together Apologies if you see this email numerous times, I am re-building my email address book and am not sure what groups you may be subscribed to. WICEN events for the rest of the year..... Good evening everyone. To keep you abreast of what is happening, below is a list of events that we know about for the rest of the year..... October 15/16 Jamboree on the air (JOTA) - not really a WICEN event but thought we'd add it Saturday 29th BMSC National Capital Rally (NatCap) Sunday 30th Pedal Power "Fitz's Challenge" cycling event - includes new "even longer" stages ! November Saturday 12 LCCC "Shannon's Safari Rally" (rescheduled from earlier in the year) And we don't have a date for the Rallye des Femme as yet ! WICEN event - 11th September - Brookvale Horse Endurance Ride

Good evening all, We are approaching the next WICEN exercise in just under 4 weeks time, so we need to see who is available. This event is a horse endurance event held around Brookvale in the northern Bridabella's. The main ride is currently scheduled to set off at 6:00 AM and we need to have our 2 operators for that leg away in front of the riders, so it will probably be about a 0500 start for some of us. Requirements are as follows..... Seven checkpoints (although this may reduce if one leg is re-run which I am told is a possibility, stand by for further information when we receive it) with the requirement for at least one operator per check point. HQ needs a couple of people, radio's to be manned from about 5:00 AM until close (expected to be at about 4:00 pm). At this point we don't have firm indications of timings, but this information will be provided as soon as we get it. Repeater(s) to be set-up on Pig Hill on the Saturday, retrieved Sunday afternoon - we will need a crew of 3 for this. Campsite will be provided for us, bring your own meals (a BBQ will be available to cook up your food). So, Anyone interested? I will shortly be heading off on holidays until the end of the month, so please reply to both Phil (his email address is cc'd to this email for those who cannot remember it) and myself so we can ensure we capture all indications of interest. WICEN NSW event - annual BWRS "Nav Shield" - July 2nd / 3rd....

Hi All, below is an edited version of the details I received from Mal Alexander, SCO WICEN NSW regarding this years Nav Shield If anyone is interested in attending please let me know. The base camp is around an hour from Goulburn. Cheers, Phil VK1PL. ================== Hi and welcome to this years NavShield team, it looks like we have a fair mix of experienced and new members, and should work well. It's great to see the newer members get involved. Some backgound, the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad (BWRS), a sister VRA Unit, has conducted the prestigious NSW Emergency Services Wilderness Navigation Shield since 1989. WICEN first assisted at the event in 1997 and has done so each year since. The event has been held at a different location each year. The challenge for BWRS is to find a new location each year. WICEN's challenge is to investigate, design and operate a communications solution that changes from year to year. Have a look at the BWRS website for an insight of the squad and the NavShield event. http://www.bwrs.org.au/ >From the first event that WICEN attended at Devils Rock in 1997, our operation has evolved from 4 simplex radio points to portable amateur repeaters, packet networks, and then into provision of commercial radio channels that the event official use, along with back up amateur voice communications. Along with the annual BWRS Barrington Tops Search and Rescue Exercise, WICEN now has extensive experience in providing communications solutions in difficult locations. Our team this year consists of the following operators. A warm welcome is extend to Phil VK1PL, Deputy State Coordinator WICEN ACT who will be joining us for the event. List of probable attendees at present are.... Mal Alexander VK2YVA Steven Heimann VK2BOS Barry McNeil VK2FP Mike Biber VK2FSES Phil Longworth VK1PL Shane Stephens VK2FBEU Joe Peters VK2JP Danny Clark VK2FDCA John Harper VK2FCOM David Dickford VK2JDD Kevin Purves VK2KEV Compton Allen VK2HRX As previously notified, the event will be held near "Black Springs" (between Oberon and Goulburn), on the weekend of 2nd / 3rd July. WICEN will need to be in operation by 08:00 hrs. Most operators arrive the night before to set up. This does leave some scope for some operators to arrive Saturday morning, as long as your location has at least one operator on air by the designated time. I won't be allocating final tasking until all locations and requirements are known, but it appears that we have sufficient operators. BWRS have designated a base camp area. It has to accommodate event officials, WICEN, competitors and their support staff. Often there are some 400 competitors. Arrivals on Friday night have been known to create bush traffic jams! The Base is always accessable by 2wd, otherwise many competitors would be unable to attend. Once BWRS designate the distant radio points (known as Radio Check Points or RCPs, usually 3) we can conduct a radio survey to investigate and test communications. We would need 3 or 4 operators with 4wd to assist, although the Base can be manned with 2wd operators. The survey is also open to members who are not actually attending the main event, all help is gratefully received. I expect the radio survey date to be advised soon. Once we test on the survey, I will be able to provide the briefing notes. If you are interested, I can give you a sample of last years notes to see the format of what you will get this year. The notes will include travel directions. Also I will indicate what non-amateur gear is needed, and WICEN will supply these resources. Teams can pool together to ensure sufficient 12V batteries, a generator, masts, antennas and amateur radios. If your team does not have a particular piece of kit we will try and find it for you. The map needed is 1:25 000 Gurnang 8029 -1N, but you should not bust a boiler to get one, as we will get a few from BWRS. I also use the OziExplorer mapping system and will provide waypoint files and important tracks for the event. You may want to check the coverage of the following repeaters to your QTH, as we may be able to hold discussion nets prior to the event. Linked Network 439.825 Kurrajong, 438.275 Berowra, 147.175 Berowra. and A stand alone portable repeater, currently located at a high point in Sydney's South West 439.875 connected to EchoLink Node 258976 Final Note: as always, the location info is "need to know"only, and not to be relayed outside WICEN, as competitors would get an unfair advantage if they knew, as they are only told the location the weekend before the event. The primary reasons are based around the more complicated approvals and permissions process and the rework we have had to do. Also, we have all had extra work and personal commitments that have made finding time to work on the rally difficult. This would have continued for the next few weeks. We are still waiting on important documents such as the Supp. Regs to come back as well. There wouldn't have been time to generate the number of man hours required for the rally to go ahead in the week leading upto the rally either. I will be touch in the future when we have a solid date worked out and we can prepare a decent time out. I will laugh if it rains heavily in the next few weeks as well! Hi all, Well this is the 1st email into the "group" and it is just a repeat of one I sent earlier. We have had a number of people respond, but are still well short of the 21 people we need. If you have not yet volunteered for this event, please send an email to wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org (not to this "group" or directly back to me) indicating your availability. here is the info to date.... G'day all, Well we have just finished our 1st Car Rally of the year and another one looms.... The LCCC Safari Rally will be held on Saturday 14th May (which clashes with the next Foundation Licence Course !) and we are looking for volunteers to man the 12 Field stations and another 6 or so for HQ. This years safari rally has 5 physical stages each run twice, 3 at Kowen, 1 at Uriarra and 1 at Bluetts. The anticipated stages are as follows.... SS1 / SS6 River Rd SS2 / SS7 Ridge Runner (a new stage that runs along the NSW / ACT border) SS3 / SS8 Basher (which is a combination of roads that has competitors going over the "jump" in the opposite direction) SS4 / SS9 Sherwood (starts top of Sherwood Rd & runs around to finish on Blue Range Rd SS5 / SS10 Bluetts HQ will be at Molonglo Gorge recreation area, and probably be in the old caravan we have used out at "Cottage 5". The organisors have indicated that they only need midpoint SOS positions in "Basher" & "Sherwood", hence the figure of 12 field stations. This has the potential to be a long day, with 1st car away at 10:30 AM, and last car due to enter the last stage at about 7:15 PM, so with an anticipated meet time of around 2.5-3 hours before the 1st competitor some people may be in for a long day.
