Coming events that we need to start getting ready for....

Hi All, I hope everyone has recovered from the Car Rally ! Well we have a few more activities in the immediate future as follows..... Next weekend is the John Moyle Field Day, and so a number of people are involved with running the club station out at Kowen. I urge you to consider taking part - it is not a WICEN event but it is a club event and it would be nice to ring home the trophy to VK1 for the 100th aniversary of Canberra ! The following weekend (23/24 March) see's the ANU "Inward Bound" activity. This does not need operators as such, but it does need some equipment installed at Mt Ginini and at other locations. Sunday 24th March we are looking for some people to erect the tower and antenna's at Exhibition Park for the National Folk Festival the following weekend (Easter) Sunday 31st March (Easter Sunday) is the National Carriage Driving Championships out at Witwood Sat 6th & Sun 7th April is the annual 2 Day Walk. Now that I have taken on the role of President of the Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club, I don't have the time to do much in the way of coordinatng the WICEN events, and I know Matt works shift and therefore does not have a lot of time to devote either and so we need somebody to step-up and assist in running the various activities and so if you can help out in those roles, please let Matt (7 myself) know of your interest. Looking for a small portable tripod for portable op's ?......

Hi All, I have just received an email from Rockby with their almost weekly 'sales" items, and one item caught my interest being a 1.6 metre high tripod (designed for floodlights) and I thought they'd be great for use on WICEN field operations. Early Advice - National Capital Rally 1st - 3rd march !

Hi All, This is an early advice regarding the national Capital Rally which is being held on Friday 1st - Sunday 3rd March. This event is the first round of the Australian Rally Championship for 2013 and sees the return of the ARC and multiday competition to the ACT. At this point in time, we believe we need to support 2 or 3 field stations on Friday (single stage run as the "Power Stage" for TV coverage and some extra ARC points), and 2 people in HQ, Saturday we need 15 people in the field with 6-8 in HQ (and possibly a person at Service Park), and Sunday we need 15 field stations and again 6-8 in HQ. Friday will be at Bluetts near the Stromlo Forest Cycling centre, Saturday will have 3 stages (each run twice) in the Tidbinbilla . Laurel Camp & East West area's, and Sunday will see 3 stages (each run twice) in Kowen plus Bluetts at around lunchtime. HQ will be at the Woden Tradies. Still looking for assistance for Sunday's WICEN activity with "Rallye des Femme"....

Good morning all, So far we have heard from VK1DW, VK1FMAC, VK1MA, VK1OC, VK1PL, VK1WN, VK1WX, VK1ZRE VK2DRK, & VK1FDMW All in the positive, and VK1ET, VK1GVC, VK1NUT, in the negative We still need a couple of more people for the event, and so if your callsign is not listed above then we ask that you consider volunteering and letting us know ASAP. Meet times are all around 8:00 - 8:15 AM in Kowen Forest, at the old Forestry Settlement site, and it is expected that it will be all over around 3:30 PM ! Operation will be on 147.150 MHz & 439.925 MHz, with alternates on 147.125 (Mt Tennent) and/or 147.175 (Bulls Head) if required. ALSO...... We need people to help cart the Marquee, Tables, Chairs, etc out to Kowen (to be there by 7:30 AM) and back to Mt Mugga Scout Hall in the afternoon, a Ute or trailer required for this ! Cheers, ..... Short notice heads-up for an upcoming event - Battle of the Beasts - Namadgi National Park

Good afternoon all, as alluded to by Phil in a previous email, we have another WICEN event looming on the horizon, this one being a new one for us. A group of mountain bike riders are staging an event in Southern Namadgi National Park on Saturday November 24th. The event starts and finishes at Caloola Farm (approximately 20km South of Tharwa) and involves a little over 70km of bush tracks through the southern Namadgi National Park. Last week I did a course run through to check communications for the event and it truly is beautiful territory down there. For this event we have 8 checkpoints plus the HQ and will be using the portable 2m and 80 MHz repeaters currently installed on Mt Tennent. Of the 8 checkpoints, 4 of them need 4WD for access and due to terrain shading, three of the checkpoints will need a capable portable setup (small mast and either a gain vertical or small yagi) to reliably access the 2m repeater. This event is a great opportunity to get into areas of the Namadgi National Park that you do not normally have access to, so represents a great opportunity to be able to see some really really spectacular scenery. If you are able to assist with the event, please respond to the wicen email address (wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org) and let Phil and myself know what type of vehicle and radio setup that you have. Whilst I would like to do this over the weekend, this weekend is JOTA and i know quite a few people are involved with that however if we can get a team together for Sunday that would be preferred, alternateiveley how about TUESDAY afternoon - say meet at the Namadgi National Park depot / office at Tharwa at 4:00 PM, transfer into the appropriate 4WD vehicles and head up from there. We do need propably 5 people for this activity, and there is some 'cartage' required of the equipment from the vehicles to the fire tower that requires the manpower of a few people in addition to the antenna raising and equipment installation. Request for additional assistance plus some more upcoming WICEN events

G'day everyone, as usual a request for additional operators for both the BMSC rally and Fitzs challenge coming up on 27 and 28 October respectively. We are still short of quite a few operators for both events, so would appreciate hearing from people to let us know if they are able to help out for these two events. As an aside, Phil VK1PL has suffered an email problem which means that he has lost emails received over the last couple of weeks to a month, so if you responded only to Phil and not the WICEN email address, could you let me know your response please. Well if it rains, it always seems to pour. So after a long dry spell for WICEN activities, we have an additional 2 events (in November) with another possible event (in December). Brookvale horse endurance ride - cancellation of WICEN support

Good evening all, with three events having been scheduled for the last weekend in October (the car rally, Fitz's challenge and the horse ride), we regretfully decided that it was not feasible to support all three events on the one weekend. As such, we discussed the feasibility of moving the horse endurance ride to a different weekend, but the organisers have advised that they will use alternative methods of communications for this years event rather than change timings for the event. Therefore the good/bad news is that we have only the two events for the last weekend in October (27th and 28th) - for which we still need many more people to help out with. Shannons Safari Rally - Postponed

Good morning fellow WICEN people Unfortunately we have received advice from the organisers of the Shannon's Safari Rally that the Rally scheduled for Saturday 7 July 2012 has been postponed due to a clash with an event being run by ACT cycling in the same area. Due to the presence of rally cars commuting between stages and large numbers of bicycle riders with associated road closures, it has been decided that the risks are too high and that the rally had to be postponed. The rally organisers are currently investigating new dates for the event and as soon as we know when the rally is rescheduled to, we will advise everyone accordingly. I apologies for the postponement of this event and hope that you will all be available for the rescheduled event (whenever that will be). Matt VK1MA WICEN ACT
