WICEN support to Fitz's Challenge 2019 - call for volunteers

Good morning all, as we progress through the busy spring season for WICEN supported activities we have one final event for spring to request your assistance, that being the Fitz's Challenge on Sunday 27 October. The Fitz Challenge is a long distance cycling event (total distance of up to 255km) were we provide safety monitoring checkpoints at various locations along the course. The course will be through Namadgi National Park and Paddys River Rd Tidbinbilla. The course is the same as previous years with checkpoints at: Tharwa Village, Rendezvous Creek, Orroral Valley U-turn, Fitz Hill, Honeysuckle Creek U-turn, Corin Forest recreation facility, Kangaroo Creek U-turn and Near Uriarra Homestead. HQ at Stromlo cycle park will run two networks, one on 2m amateur band and one on an 80MHz WICEN allocation. We will need at least two operators on two shifts, total four. Advance Notice - BMSC "Rallye des Femme" 2019 is planned for Sat 7 December 2019

Good afternoon all, Just a quick note to let you know that WICEN has been asked to once again support the BMSC's "Rallye des Femme" lady drivers car rally on Saturday 7th of December. This rally is planned to be run in Kowen Forest for the afternoon, so no early starts ! This is just a notification and is not a call for volunteers, that will come later. Whilst in early notification mode, I have also been informed that the 2020 National Capital Rally (NatCap) will be conducted earlier in the year and is booked to be conducted on the weekend 21/22 March 2020. Matt et al, I too was thinking of if/where/how we might migrate our other mailing lists as you have listed and while we are at it I suggest we should have a wider look at our IT services. Carl said that he's planning to move everything off his home server so imho it's timely to identify all the CRARC services we have on server.carl.home and decide where they should go. Firstly, Carl has taken the lead on VK1-News and the VK1-Reflector and the *(a)groups.io option seems like an ideal destination. So what else does CRARC have by the way of IT/internet services? Mailing lists: wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org wicen-members(a)crarc.ampr.org education(a)crarc.ampr.org membership(a)crarc.ampr.org committee(a)crarc.ampr.org Any others I've missed? At first glance, all of these lists (with the exception of committee@) are in limited use by which I mean that a change in email address would not cause major disruption. The WICEN addresses are mostly used for outgoing emails to WICEN volunteers when planning WICEN events and are otherwise inactive. The education one is used for our education ppl to share relevant info and it is also a contact email address for incoming queries from anyone who finds it on the website or elsewhere - a change could be managed. I publicise the membership address to help me sort incoming correspondence relevant to membership and most corresp is in response to a request from me (usually to pay membership fees) so no problem if it changes. But the committee one is the main contact email address for the club committee and we have actively promoted its use widely for incoming correspondence (over PO Box 600) and a change of the committee email address would have to be done slowly and carefully to avoid loss of important correspondence. So on the surface it seems to me that groups.io lists would do the job of the WICEN lists, education and membership without much grief in changing over, the committee one is a more difficult matter. Leaving that thought hanging, I have couple of qn: 1. Is is possible, at least in the interim, to retain the list email addresses above and have them forward to a groups.io list for list management and email distrib? That way the 'public facing' email addresses would remain unchanged but the back end distrib function would be done by groups.io. 2. IIRC we have the crarc.org.au domain reserved for future use. Would this be a good time to start migrating to that domain for email addresses and web services if the original plan was for this to happen one day? 3. If a domain migration is desirable, can we migrate the above email distrib lists slowly to, eg, wicen(a)crarc.org.au and so on while using groups.io as the back end? 4. Would the use of groups.io solve or exacerbate the problem we experience where emails from some senders (notably airservices and Paypal) pass thru' our current mailing list server and are then rejected by gmail and sometimes bigpond? 5. How does groups.io handle spam? ------------------------------------------------------------- And to return to the list of IT services on Carl's home server, I think we have: www.crarc.ampr.org - our website File repository - I know not what's in it but it gets a mention now and again. Probably historical material. Anything else? As we are now using Google Drive for our current document store I suggest that we should do a systematic migration of whatever documents are stored on Carl's server to GD, as we have discussed in committee once or twice. WICEN - Request for assistance - National Capital Rally 2019 - 11th May.

Hello everyone, This email is going out to people on the ACT WICEN MEMBERS and VK1-NEWS email lists and so some people may get it twice. This is the formal request for assistance for this years National Capital Rally which is being conducted Saturday 11th May 2019. It is a single day event only this year at the request of the competitors who have to Travel. This will have various competition classes but no APRC this year. The draft itinerary and maps from the organisers reveals there will be 4 physical stages on the Saturday with each stage being run twice. Saturday is similar the same as last year for 3 of the stages, but a short stage at Hyles Block has been added. Details I have at present are.... SS1 / SS5 will be Hyles Block which is a small piece of Forest located between Brindabella Road and the Molonglo River accessed from Brindabella Road in the Cotter to Uriarra section of the road - almost directly opposite the Uriarra Village entrance roads. This stage is approx 10.4 KM's of competitive distance and will have a Start, SOS A & Stop. Guestimate meet time is expected to be around 0600 and a potential finish time around 1500. SS2 / SS6 will be Sherwood which starts out on a side road from Blue Range Road and runs through the forest finishing off at the intersection of Blue Range Road and Old Mill Road This stage is approx 27 KM's of competitive distance and will have a Start, SOS A, SOS B, SOS C, SOS D, SOS E & Stop. Guestimate meet time is expected to be around 0545 and a potential finish time around 1600. SS3 / SS7 will be Cottage 5 Ways which is located in the Pearces West / Tidbinbilla part of the Brindabellas. This stage is approx 16.4 KM's of competitive distance and will have a Start, SOS A, SOS B, SOS C & Stop. Guestimate meet time is expected to be around 0630 and a potential finish time around 1630. SS4 / SS8 will be Tidbinbilla which starts out near the Tidbinbilla Tracking Station and weaves it's way back to Paddys River road near Cotter. This stage is approx 18.2 KM's of competitive distance and will have a Start, SOS A, SOS B, SOS C & Stop. Guestimate meet time is expected to be around 0715 and a potential finish time around 1730. We will need 20 Field stations for the Saturday and around 5 or 6 people in HQ across the day also. HQ is at the Abode Hotel in Woden this year with the 'service park' in the open air carpark opposite the Abode Hotel and near the Hellenic Club in Woden. We need to firm up people's availability and restrictions so as to be able to organise a roster. Volunteers will also need to REGISTER AS A VOLUNTEER on the NatCap Rally website once that is up and running, please get in early at http://netiernationalcapitalrally.com.au/home/volunteers/ so you can be listed to get a T-shirt etc. Assuming the volunteers registration form is similar to previous years, please note that you are a WICEN Radio Operator in the "Comments and Previous Experience" section of the registration page (regardless of whether you have done rallies before or not), and select "Administration" in the "Area's interested in working" section. I am also looking for people to look after the booking out, and returning back in of the fleet of radio's used by the officials. The officials use a set of Commercial UHF frequencies and have a set of ICOM Mobile and Handheld radio's, along with other radio's borrowed from WICEN and elsewhere. The tracking of these radio's has been very problematic over the years and so I'd like to get some people from a radio background to handle the issueing and receipt of these items instead of it being left to "anybody who is around" at HQ. It is not very onerous and would suit somebody who has time to spare during the week leading up to the Rally (Tues 7th - Sat 11th May Inclusive) and don't mind sitting around with not much to do. As this is only 5 weeks away, I don't have the time at present to set up a Google Docs form and so If you can assist then please email to wicen(a)crarc.ampr.org the following information.... WICEN support request - Canberra 2 day walk, 30-31 Mar 2019

Good evening all, the first significant event of the WICEN 2019 calendar is almost upon us. WICEN provides communications support for 2 days with a HQ station at Albert Hall on Commonwealth Avenue. We will need a minimum of three people per day in the HQ each day and 4 at checkpoints on Saturday and 8 at checkpoints on the Sunday. So, I am looking for volunteers to help out - 7 on the Saturday and 11 on the Sunday, but the more volunteers we get the easier it will be. As in previous years we would like to be able to provide the option of a couple of bicycle WICEN operators to ride behind the walkers and perform a sweep function - these we have joking referred to as Wicycle ops, but in the couple of years we have had them, they perform a very valuable role. If you are fit enough to ride 25km or more and wish to perform this role (2m/70cm HT with good performing antenna system essential), please let us know. This year's event will see a 25km route on the Saturday starting from Coolemon Ridge and winding its way along the Centenary Trail then around Black Mountain Reserve to the Botanical Gardens finishing up at Albert Hall. Not all walkers will do the full route and will be dropped at several starting points along the way, but all finish up at Albert Hall. The Sunday walk consist of a number of walks around Lake Burleigh Griffin up to a total distance of about 21km. If you are able to assist we would love to hear from you.
