Hi everyone, Well we are starting to move into the warmer part of the year and so the number of WICEN events is starting to ramp up. The first of these is the Brindabella Motor Sport Club (BMSC) "Brindabella Stages" that is being conducted on Saturday 15th October. At this stage we don't have all the details, but here are the basics.... 8 stages (4 stages run twice), apparently something like East West, Hyles Block, Pierces East & Tidbinbilla (order may be different), then service and repeat. HQ - "The Realm" one of the lower rooms (I need to make sure we can access outside !) Service Park - Open Area at "Little National Hotel" Probably need 12 or 13 in the field and 3 or 4 at HQ. I would be looking at using VHF & UHF portable repeaters on Mt McDonald for the WICEN comm's and probably only a single 'commercial' channel for this event. We don't have an indication of the timings of the day as yet, but would expect some early starts for the early stages (6:00 AM type ?). So at the moment, I am looking for volunteers for the event, if you can assist would you please let me know your availability and preferences so I can get a roster together. This email is sent to people on the ACT WICEN MEMBERS group, another email will be sent to the VK1-News group at a later date. Cancellation of WICEN supported events: BMSC Night Howl Stages & ACTERA Brookvale Horse Endurance Ride

Good afternoon all. A quick email to advise that both the BMSC Night Howl Stages & ACTERA Brookvale Horse Endurance Ride that were scheduled for next weekend have been cancelled due to weather and or access related issues. This means that the next event we are confirmed for is the Fitz's challenge at the end of October, although there might be a car rally in either the Bega area or the Brindabellas in mid-October (yes as always, a clash with JOTA). At this point we are waiting for information from the organisers on their plans for the car rally and will pass this on once we get some more certainty as to which way they will be proceeding. Help required to remove repeater gear from Kowen Fire Tower TODAY (Monday 13th June) at 2:00 PM

Hi everyone, A late call I know but we are looking at recovering the Antenna's and Solar Panels from Kowen Fire Tower today and are seeking a couple of extra bodies to assist. Meet time is 2:00 PM at the Seven Mile Road gate on Sutton Road (this is about 1/2 a kilometre from the ACT/NSW border on Sutton Road). Chat Channel will be on the Bulls Head repeater VK1RWP on 147.175 MHz repeater. Roads are 2 WD access. Bring warmish clothes, etc, as it can get cold on the hilltop. Cheers, ... Phil Longworth VK1PL

good afternoon all, the roster for the rally has been filled really well, at 2 weeks out we have only one field station on the Sunday left to fill, and we still need an extra person for HQ on the sunday also. If you haven't already let ne know of your availability (or non availability) could you let me know by return email. Call for Assistance - WICEN - National Capital Rally 27 - 29 May 2016

Good afternoon all, Apologies to those people who may see this email numerous times, I have sent it out to a few different emails groups so as to capture the most people I can. Time is marching on and the 2016 National Capital Rally ("NatCap") is fast approaching with the event being conducted on Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May 2016. This years event has a special spectators stage being conducted on the Friday Night at the Westside Container Village in conjunction with the ceremonial start. It is only a short 1.5 km stage starting and finishing near the Captain Cook fountain but it is well worth going to have a look at as the cars do a run under Commonwealth Avenue bridge and along Barrine Drive at the edge of the lake, around the carpark near Parkes Way and back again. This year we have the single stage on Friday evening, 3 Forest stages at Kowen on Saturday (each run twice) with another run at Westside Saturday night and then 3 Stages at Uriarra / Tidbinbilla on Sunday (each run twice), 14 stages in all. Stages are as follows Friday Lakeside 1 Start & Stop + HQ Saturday Settlement Start & Stop Wamboin River Start, SOS A, B, C, D, E & Stop Hibernian Start, SOS A, B, C, D & Stop Lakeside 2 Start & Stop Sunday Hyles Block Start, SOS A & Stop East West Start, SOS A, B & Stop Cottage 5 Ways Start, SOS A, B, C, D, E & Stop Meet and proposed close down times have not yet been determined, my "Guestimates" are as follows however (based on the proposed itinerary dated 12 March) Friday Lakeside 16:30 - 18:30 Saturday Settlement 06:45 - 17:15 Wamboin River 06:00 - 17:30 Hibernian 07:00 - 18:45 Lakeside 2 13:30 - 20:00 Sunday Hyles Block 07:00 - 16:00 East West 06:30 - 17:00 Cottage 5 Ways 07:30 - 18:00 We will need 6 to 9 people in HQ each day as well. HQ this year is at The Hotel Realm in Barton. So as a wrap up, we need 4 people for the Friday, 17 Fields stations for Saturday plus 6-9 HQ staff, and 14 field stations for Sunday plus 6-9 HQ staff. Looking at using standard FM VHF & UHF for most of the rally, though we may consider using the new DMR capability for one or two stages as well as a means to test the technology, etc. If you have never done a car rally before, don't let that hold you back as we can assign you into an introductory role where you just need to note the passing of a car and radioing that in to HQ when requested. No comes the standard "Plead" for assistance. Please hit the REPLY (not REPLY ALL) button on your email client and let us know if you can assist along with what you preference would be as to placements, etc. Note that some locations of SOS points will mandate the use of people who can operate away from their vehicle so please provide info if you have that facility available (noting the length of times above that you would need to be able to operate). Short notice WICEN event - Witwood horse carriage driving event

Evening all, we have had a request for assistance at horse carriage driving event to be held out at Witwood (half way between Bungendore and Braidwood) on 17 April. Yes this is short notice being only 2 weeks away, but the running of the event has only just been confirmed due to reasons outside of the organisers control. We have assisted Dot and Doug with these events at their property over many years and would like to be able to help them this year. If there are insufficient numbers of WICEN personnel to completely provide communications for the event, we will provide some of their volunteers with UHF handhelds and run the event on one of our commercial frequencies. Notwithstanding the short notice, can I ask for expressions of interest / availability to participate - note that a free bacon and egg roll on arrival and lunch are on offer for those who wish to assist. Both Phil and I are unfortunately unavailable due other commitments, so we would also be looking for an event coordinator for this activity - minimal organisation required and support from Phil and I prior to the event will of course be provided. 2 day walk - 2016 - update on WICEN assistance

Hi guys, we have finally received the necessary information from the organisers of the 2 day walk, so our participation will be going ahead. I intend to have a draft roster out tomorrow or Monday at the latest. If your availability to assist has changed, please advise me ASAP to minimise changes to the roster. The Sunday walk will be around Lake Burleigh Griffin along a similar route to last year, but the Saturday walk represents a significant change with the walkers being bussed out to the start points (Cooleman, Tuggeranong, Gowrie and O'Malley) and then walking back to the usual end point by the lake in Barton. Call for volunteers - Two day walk event 2-3 April 2016

Good evening all, 2016 is fast moving along and we have the first event of the year coming up. This year the Canberra Two Day walk event occurs on Saturday 2nd/Sunday 3rd April. Whilst we do not yet have much in the way of details, we envisage that similar requirements as previous years - which is about 6-7 field stations and a headquarters element each day - so all up, about 10-11 WICEN operators per day. We do not have timings or checkpoints for this year's events and the different checkpoints will have varying times they will need to be manned, but will advise as soon as we know what they will be. This is usually quite a low intensity event and involves counting the numbers of walkers for the different distances that go past your field station (aka checkpoint) and relaying this to the headquarters. Traditionally we have operated on a 2m simplex frequency sometimes we have used a portable 2m repeater temporarily setup on a local hill, but communications are usually easily conducted using a handheld radio with a reasonable antenna on it. This is a great introductory event to WICEN supported activities for amateurs who are new to the hobby or have not otherwise experienced the higher intensity events (like the upcoming National Capital Rally) that allows for a gentle slow paced introduction to WICEN activities. We would strongly encourage anyone who is interested in WICEN activities to give this event a go - the more the merrier!
