This year the Canberra Two Day walk event occurs on Saturday 2nd/Sunday 3rd April. Whilst we do not yet have much in the way of details, we envisage that similar requirements as previous years – which is about 6-7 field stations and a headquarters element each day – so all up, about 10-11 WICEN operators per day. This is usually quite a low intensity event and involves counting the numbers of walkers for the different distances that go past your field station (aka checkpoint) and relaying this to the headquarters. Traditionally we have operated on a 2m simplex frequency sometimes we have used a portable 2m repeater temporarily setup on a local hill, but communications are usually easily conducted using a handheld radio with a reasonable antenna on it.

 

This is a great introductory event to WICEN supported activities for amateurs who are new to the hobby or have not otherwise experienced the higher intensity events (like the upcoming National Capital Rally) that allows for a gentle slow paced introduction to WICEN activities. We would strongly encourage anyone who is interested in WICEN activities to give this event a go – the more the merrier!
